Folk Heart (February Mail Club)
Red Folk Heart Linocut
As I have been looking forward to moving closer to family, I have been contemplating creative ways to stay in-touch with my cross-country loved ones. The idea of a “monthly mail club” came to mind after seeing several other small-large artists online build their own. I realized that one of the ways I show my love is through making thoughtful art.
So, the idea of creating one piece of art per month (since I am already in create mode, I am just making my crafting time more purposeful) and sending it to a small mail club of loved ones, seemed like the perfect way to stay closer to my family in a way that is authentic to me. I also loved the idea of snail mail in this digital age.
About the Red Folk Heart Linocut
And so, this handmade red folk heart linocut print was created — right in time for Valentine’s Day. The red folk heart linocut is inspired by a mix of Scandinavian folk and vintage charm. The scalloped border around the heart and along the border of the print is supposed to resemble a crochet doily. The delicate flowers at the center of the heart and the bow on top add sweetness and charm. I was also pulling inspiration from the arts and crafts we made for Valentine’s Day in elementary school — lots of hearts, ribbons, lace, glitter, and construction paper. Also noteworthy, this print was the first time I printed with red ink. I typically have printed with blank ink in the past, so printing with a new color was an exciting step in my linocut / block printing journey.
Stay tuned for next month’s family print club piece!
With a little stardust,
SR~
